Labyrinth Anaesthesia

This treatment specifically targeted at Ménière's disease involves instillating a highly concentrated solution of a local anaesthetic through the eardrum into the tympanic cavity.

Our understanding is that this briefly blocks the autonomous nervous system of the inner ear. After that, the pressure equilibrium of the inner ear appears to restabilise, and the vertigo attacks settle down. You can imagine this as similar to briefly shutting down and then rebooting a computer.

Labyrinth Anaesthesia leads to temporary vertigo (of varying degrees of intensity), which is why one overnight stay at the clinic is necessary with this intervention. The treatment is performed under local anaesthesia, and is largely painless. It is also - as already mentioned - without risk to your hearing.

Around 85 - 90% of our patients have experienced definite and long-term improvement of their vertigo attacks.

In some cases, the treatment needed to be repeated due to recurrence of the complaints. This is possible at any time due to the lack of side-effects.

Labyrinth Anaesthesia has improved patients' tinnitus and hearing in around 30 - 35% of cases.
